Recurring billing

Subscription invoices that issue themselves on a fixed date, with an automatic reminder when payment does not follow.

Recurring billing issues the same invoice at a regular interval: subscriptions, maintenance, rents, monthly retainers. Issued, sent, matched against the payment, with no intervention.

Where it becomes a system: when payment does not follow. A good mechanism spots the passed due date, reminds on day 2 then day 8, and alerts a human only if nothing moves. An SME with fifty subscriptions handling that by hand loses a day a month, and lets overdue invoices age in silence.
