API
The door through which one piece of software agrees to talk to another. It is what lets a closed sale create the invoice with no re-entry.
An API (“application programming interface”) is a piece of software's official door: through it, another program can read or write data, cleanly, with permission. When your CRM “connects” to your invoicing tool, it happens through their APIs.
Why it matters to you: without an API, connecting two tools is manual work. That is re-entry. With one, a won deal can create the invoice, notify the team and update the numbers on its own. Before paying for a new tool, one simple question: “does it have a complete API?”
